Thank you for the nice comments on Wednesday about my man — he is a wonderful husband and wildly talented. I wish I could respond to every.single.one of your comments but I’m sticking to my New Year’s Goal of less computer time — no blogging once my kids get up.
A few months ago I decided to make my own facial moisturizer. There were two main motivational factors for doing this — First, I despise spending $20+ for facial lotion that comes in a 0.5 oz. jar, an amount that my skin can absorb in one day. Seriously the amount of lotion they put in bottles/jars is ridiculous. Second, many facial lotions contain a bunch of crap fillers and harmful chemicals.
It’s not perfect science (yet) but this is my favorite concoction thus far…
All Natural Homemade Facial Moisturizer
1/4 cup aloe vera gel
1 tbsp. vegetable glycerin
1 tsp. coconut oil
1/4 tsp. grapeseed oil
10 drops rose hip seed oil
Mix all ingredients together in a small container. The coconut oil hardens at room temperature so you will see chunks in the container. Rub a small amount of the moisturizer in your hands and the coconut oil melts right away.
Pros –> It took one week for my skin to get used to the change and now my skin is the best it has ever felt, skin feels moisturized all-day, no dryness, makes you glow, my husband loves it, no toxic chemicals, safe for the kids, so much cheaper (all the ingredients cost about $30 — saving hundreds of dollars over one year)
Cons –> not sure how it would be under makeup (I don’t wear any), slightly greasy at first from the oils but I think it feels amazing (I don’t like the feeling of dry skin), the coconut oil hardens at room temperature so there are chunks of coconut oil in the container.
Have any of you made your own facial moisturizer?
What ingredients do you use?
If you use coconut oil, is there a trick to make it evenly mixed in with the other ingredients? It’s really not a big deal since it doesn’t change the effectiveness of the moisturizer.
Have a great weekend!!
♥ Lisa

I don’t make my own products but do but with good ingredients and actually use alba’s coconut cleanser. and when I’m cooking I’ve been known to rub coconut oil on my hands for moisture. So how much computer time are you down to? I’m on this way, way too much good goal.
I’ve never made my own moisturizer, but I love the idea of putting coconut oil in it. I can only imagine how soothing it’d be!
Hope you have a fabulous weekend!
I’m guessing you would melt the coconut oil to mix it, but it still might solidify as it cools? I’m going to give this a try – I’ll let you know how it works under make-up.
I had no idea you could make your own! This is really cool. I like to run olive oil on my cuticles in the winter – it does wonders for dryness.
Love this – my mom makes her own soaps and lotions. So much more natural and pure.

This is great Lisa! I love using natural products and how fun to make some on your own. I could totally see myself using this as night and then for the day, use something lighter. Coconut oil does leave your skin feeling a little greasy and that would drive me crazy at work.
Now I use Emu Oil as my moisturizer at night, but I’ve been wanting to try coconut oil too!

I am so intrigued! I really want to try this.
I have super sensitive skin so I wonder how it would do. I have been trying to buy more natural products too.
Wow, I am impressed..I haven’t made it to making my own products…you go girl!
Happy Friday!
Sounds intriguing! I just used up theblast of my coconut oil this morning-need to buy some more! My face can get a little on the oily side, but I’d love to try this on my body. Fun!

I LOVE this idea! You know I’ll be doing it soon. I need to give my skin a little break from messing with it…but I’ll start collecting the ingredients!
I have used oils on my face in the past (from Living Libations) and I loved washing and moisturizing with them….but they were SO expensive!
It’s interesting that you said it took your skin a week to adjust–I think maybe sometimes I don’t give my skin time enough to adjust to new things.
On the chunk thing—I wonder if you mixed it in the blender, or warmed them up to like 80 degrees (coconut oil would definitely be melted then, right?). If you mixed it while everything is a little warm, I would think maybe the coconut oil would stay mixed better? Hmmm…not sure, but the chunks probably aren’t really a problem, right?

I use coconut oil as moisturizer at night. Since it is a little greasy I prefer to use it at night vs. looking shiny at work haha.
Thanks so much for this!

I’m always experimenting with different oils. I have that big bottle of grapeseed oil, too.
I love coconut oil as a moisturizer and also a hair treatment – it’s the best! But – it is oily, so I only put it on before bedtime and only on the spots that are super dry (sides of my nose, elbows…). And I officially do not like you anymore. Why? Because you’re so pretty, in every picture, and you don’t wear makeup!!!

I LOVE NATURAL FACIAL MOISTURIZORS!!! I find that if I use something not-so-natural, my face really reacts to it. I love how you made your own: I need to get those ingredients so I can do that and save myself some money!

Hi Lisa! You must have read my mind!
I’ve been completely focused on finding products with acceptable ingredients and it’s hard! Especially on a bit of a budget! I use something from Whole Foods on my face, but it’s running out so I’m going to whip up some lotion a la Lisa this weekend.
Look great AND save money? Yes please and thank you!
Best,
Amanda

Yay =) The best part about making your own is that you can adjust the ingredients however you like!!

Great post! I have been using coconut oil as a moisturizer ever since you mentioned it a few weeks back (I think that was you…?). I had never thought of it but it makes total sense! We should only put on our skin what we are okay to ingest!
I’ve been using it as a morning AND evening moisturizer simply because my skin is SOOOO dry. Although it’s a lot better, I know I need to add a mask of some sort to get rid of the flaky dryness once and for all. Oh, and although it’s greasy, I just wait a few minutes before putting on my makeup and it’s fine! If I do it right away without waiting, then the makeup slides around a bit. Not good for when you have to fill in your eyebrows like I do!! LOL!
One question, why the Rose Hip? Is it for scent or for purpose?
Thanks!
This is why I chose rose seed hip oil:
Contains retinol (Vitamin A), high in vitamin C, high in the essential fatty acids – linoleic acid or omega-6, and linolenic acid or omega-3.
Commonly used in skin care products.
It is used for a variety of skin conditions: dermatitis, acne and eczema, mature and sun burnt skin as well as brittle nails, wrinkles, and used to heal scarring.
